Located in the middle of a bustling downtown, Portland State University is a one-of-a-kind school. It is the largest university in the state of Oregon and students come from around the country and world to be a part of this eclectic campus. PSU is known for being a part of the community, and students complete projects working with local organizations to prove it.

Portland State is also known for its green footprint. Being one of the most eco-friendly and environmentally aware university campuses in the nation is important at PSU and it's a reputation they strive to continue. From the campus, nestled in the middle of a large city, to the unique campus culture, Portland State University is a place that thousands of students choose every year.

The Campus

The PSU campus sprawls for dozens of city blocks in every direction in the middle of downtown Portland. Classes are houses in restored historic buildings and state of the art laboratories alike. The campus boasts a plethora of locations to meet all your needs as a student including: dozens of restaurants on and off campus, a five-story library, a state-of-the-art recreation center, and studying nooks and crannies throughout.

In the city of Portland, PSU is ideally located amid a network of tram and bus lines so students can easily move to and from campus. The city itself is one of the growing popularity for young people around the world. Because of this, you'll find the culture of Portland is welcoming and engaging. With a budding music industry and a food culture that causes some Americans to call Portland, "foodie heaven," you'll find plenty to love about Portland.

Outside of the city Portland State students will find plenty to do and endless sights to take in. Centrally located between a towering snow capped mountain, with year-round skiing, and an expanse of beautiful coastline, Portland is less than 90 minutes from outdoor fun in every direction. For closer in activity, hiking and water sports can be enjoyed up and down the Columbia River Gorge, just a short drive away. Some students also enjoy the proximity of Portland to a few other major metropolises; Seattle, Washington and Vancouver, Canada are less than a half-day's drive away.


Offering undergraduate, graduate, and post-baccalaureate programs with over 220 different degree options, PSU has most anything you could be looking for. They're also famous for a few programs in particular. Most notably, the Urban Planning program is renowned as one of the best there is. Other popular programs include social work, business, and sustainability.


Students at PSU live both on campus and in their own housing with a commute to the campus. Whichever option you choose, you'll find a welcome home in Portland. On campus, a variety of living options are available for students on varying budgets, and with particular interests in apartment or dorm size and location. Some students choose to live right in the middle of campus, while others live in large apartments a short walk away, but all students enjoy the convenience and camaraderie of being able to take advantage of student housing.

Costs of housing on campus are generally cheaper than living off campus, given the extra expenses of commuting and paying for utilities. The school website shows that housing on campus might range between $600 and $900 a month, including all utilities. Adding in additional expenses such as food, the school estimates typical student expenses to range between $974 and $1289 per month, whereas off campus students might expect to spend as much as $1400 per month on living expenses.

Student Life

At PSU, students will find plenty to do when they aren't studying. Whether you take an exercise class or make use of the facilities, you'll come to love the sports center at PSU. You might also be interested in seeing the Vikings, Portland State's sports teams in action at a football or basketball game.

Groups and clubs, and numerous events overflow onto Portland's Park Blocks, a tree-lined stretch of inner-city park in the middle of campus, all year long, so students will always be able to watch or get involved with what is going on at campus.
